Experts Say Ciletuh Geopark Is Prone To Earthquakes and Tsunami

Rakyat Utama. Tsunami Expert Bandung Institute of Technology (ITB) Hamzah Latief said based on the results of his team's research, the Ciletuh Palabuhanratu Geopark area, Sukabumi, West Java was an area prone to earthquakes and tsunamis.

"At the location of this geopark there is an earth plate namely Cimandiri, if an earthquake landslides, a local tsunami will occur," Hamzah said in a seminar entitled Palabuhanratu Tsunami Potential in Sukabumi, as quoted by Antara.

The earthquake and tsunami cannot be predicted when it will occur. But Hamzah asks that all be aware because there is potential.Hamzah explained that for the Sukabumi sea area, the wave height in the event of a tsunami is indeed quite high. That's because the Palabuhanratu region is just above the Cimandiri fault.

With this situation, Hamzah said that if there was a potentially tsunami earthquake, almost the entire coast would be affected, starting from Ujung Genteng Beach in Ciracap District.

In anticipation of the results of the study Hamzah then made an evacuation map in the Sukabumi sea waters and selter.

With the evacuation map, the community is expected to know the evacuation route in the event of a disaster.

"What must be done in the event of a tsunami is to immediately run to the highlands or buildings that are indeed resistant to these waves," Hamzah said.

Besides Sukabumi, the results of ITB's research also included DKI Jakarta in the category prone to tsunamis. Hamzah said that if a tsunami occurs in the capital city the wave height is only 1.2 meters. What you have to watch out for is the strength of the current.
